Sindhu and Prannoy Power Into Second Round as India’s Campaign Sees Mixed Fortunes at Singapore Open
India’s badminton campaign at the Singapore Open witnessed mixed results as PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy advanced to the second round in singles events, while multiple Indian mixed doubles pairs exited in the first round. Sindhu and Prannoy secured notable victories, whereas Malvika Bansod and doubles teams suffered defeats.
In the women’s singles first round, Sindhu delivered a commanding performance against Wen Yu Zhang of Canada, securing a straight-games victory 21-14, 21-9 to advance further in the tournament. In another women’s singles encounter, Malvika Bansod bowed out after a hard-fought defeat against Supanida Katethong of Thailand, going down 21-14, 18-21, 11-21 in a three-game contest.
In the men’s singles draw, Prannoy showcased resilience and tactical strength to overcome Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke in a closely contested match. After losing the opening game 19-21, Prannoy bounced back to claim the next two games 21-16, 21-14, sealing his place in the second round.
The mixed doubles competition, however, proved disappointing for India. The pair of Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila suffered a straight-games defeat at the hands of China’s Zhang Chi and Cheng Xing, losing 18-21, 13-21 in the opening round. Another Indian duo, Amrutha Pramuthesh and Ashith Surya, also exited early after a 11-21, 17-21 loss to Japan’s Sayaka Hobara and Yuichi Shimogami.
With singles players advancing but doubles pairs exiting early, India’s overall campaign reflected a mixed start at the Singapore Open, highlighting both competitive promise and areas requiring recovery in the tournament ahead.
